The tale of the enigmatic giant serpent
A bizarre legend spreads on internet forums and podcasts that a 50-foot snake lurks in Central Africa, ready to strike passing aircraft if disturbed. Probably bogus news, like most cryptozoology stories, but still an excellent story. A WWII Belgian Air Force Colonel reported seeing a huge greenish-brown snake in 1959 while helicoptering above Katanga Province in the Belgian-occupied Congo. As an experienced pilot, he claimed to be adept at assessing ground objects' sizes from above. He said the snake "raised up" its neck by 10 feet and looked at the chopper for a bite when the plane sank down within 30 feet. The pilot, a respected Air Force veteran, was trusted and had no obvious motive to lie. However, it seems doubtful that this fabled snake lives in the Congo Basin.
Mystery Apes of Bili Forest
The Congo, enormous and deep, is a refuge and home to some of the world's oddest wildlife. The Congo basin is home to three of the four giant ape species, our closest relatives. Bigger chimps with gorilla-like traits lived in the deep Congolese jungle. The local chimps are called "Bili apes." According to tribal sources, Bili apes howled at the moon, nested like gorillas, preyed on leopards and maybe lions, and could grow larger than other chimps. The world's largest chimps are maybe 6-foot Bili apes, a chimp subspecies from the Bili Forest in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Larger than other chimps, they stand out. They're a subspecies of the common chimp and have one of the world's largest populations. Watch out for Bili apes in Congo's jungles, if you’re brave enough to step enter.
